Indiana Unemployment Rate Holds Steady
327,000 Hoosiers Looking For Work

INDIANAPOLIS -- Indiana's unemployment rate held at 9.7 percent for January as some 327,000 people were looking for work.The state Department of Workforce Development statistics released Wednesday revised December's jobless rate to 9.7 percent from the preliminary rate of 9.9 percent.Interactive: State-By-State Unemployment Figures
Indiana matched the national unemployment rate.Workforce Development Commissioner Teresa Voors said the state's rate is holding steady thanks to slowing job losses."Similar to the rest of the nation, Indiana isn't seeing much change right now," Voors said.Non-farm employment declined by 2,000 in January, but manufacturing, financial and business services reported significant employment jumps."We did see an increase in manufacturing, financial, and temporary help increase in the month of January," said Marc Lotter, of DWD. "That's always a good sign. We saw some declines in private education and health services. We think that might be based on some timings of some winter breaks"Indiana continues to report the lowest unemployment among its neighboring states. Elkhart County led the state with a 15.6 percent unemployment rate. Hamilton County's jobless rate of 7.2 percent is the third-lowest in the state, behind Daviess and Monroe counties.The state's unemployment rate hit a record high in November 1982 at 12.8 percent.
