Indiana Unemployment Holds Line

Added Jobs, New Job-Seekers Even Out

Indiana added 6,300 jobs in May, but the number of people entering the workforce was about the same, keeping the unemployment rate at an even 10 percent for the month, unchanged from April.

While there is a general malaise in the job market, the Department of Workforce Development said that 1 in 10 new jobs added within the last five months in the U.S. were in Indiana, even though the state only accounts for about 2 percent of the nation's population.

"It is welcome news that private sector employment grew in Indiana for the fifth consecutive month," said Mark Everson, DWD commissioner. "While unemployment is still too high, we are seeing a sharp drop in new unemployment claims, a 32 percent decline over the past year."

Growth was noted in several sectors, including professional and business services, private education and health services and manufacturing. The sharpest sector declines were in trade, transportation and utilities, along with construction.

Indiana still has the lowest unemployment rate among its neighbors, though the jobless rate declined in all bordering states and overall U.S. unemployment is 9.7 percent.

"Since the beginning of the year, one in 10 jobs created in the United States has been here in Indiana, so that's a promising sign," said Valerie Kroeger with Workforce Development.

At the personnel staffing firm, Robert Half International, managers said requests for hires in a number of fields are increasing.

"We see a lot of administrative and office support, specifically sales assistants, customer service representatives," said staffing specialist Sonda Sorg. "In the accounting and finance sector we see, you know, financial analysts are in demand, entry-level staff accountants."

But University of Indianapolis economics professor Matt Will is not nearly as upbeat.

He said Indiana would be creating about 15,000 jobs a month, not 6,300, if the economy were really recovering, and noted that there are segments of the state's economy that are still shedding jobs.

"The job losses that we've seen predominantly are coming in the logistics industry, and we're also seeing a lot of jobs lost in financial segments," he said. "Those are two industries that are very important to the state of Indiana."
