Forbes Names Lilly's Taurel One Of Worst CEOs

POSTED: 9:02 pm EST April 28, 2004

The latest issue of Forbes Magazine named Eli Lilly and Co. Chief Executive Officer Sidney Taurel as one the five-worst performing company heads in the country.

Taurel, who's led the Indianapolis-based pharmaceutical company for more than six years, received a grade of "F" from the magazine and was ranked at No. 4.

The ranking compared stockholders' returns to the CEO's compensation, highlighting Taurel's $12.8 million annual salary and the less than 3 percent return investors have received since he took over.

Lilly officials released a statement calling the Forbes report an inadequate representation of Taurel's leadership during a challenging time at the company.

The statement also called the market the ultimate judge of performance, and that investors have shown confidence in the company's prospects and leadership.

Walt Disney CEO Michael Eisner also made the worst-performing list.
