INDIANAPOLIS - Mike's Carwash, a ubiquitous name locally for decades, will change its name in central Indiana as it undergoes a reorganization that will split the company in two.
The company announced Friday morning that the two brothers who own the chain, Bill Dahm and Mike Dahm, are going their separate ways, splitting the company into two carwash chains with different operating areas.
The plan calls for Bill Dahm to operate 26 carwashes in central Indiana, including Indianapolis, Kokomo, Lafayette, Terre Haute, Anderson and Columbus. The name on those carwashes will change to Crew Carwash.
Mike Dahm will run 15 carwashes in other areas, including Cincinnati, Evansville, Dayton, Fort Wayne and Mishawaka. Those will retain the Mike's Carwash name.
According to the company's news release, the change was made to set up the businesses for growth.
"As Mike and I talked about the future of Mike's Carwash, we began to realize the potential for growth and continuing the business well beyond our lifetimes," Bill Dahm said in the news release. "We came to the conclusion that our families' long term opportunities increased if we reorganized into two separate companies."
The change splits a business the brothers have worked together on for 27 years.
Mike's Carwash began in Fort Wayne in 1948, run by Joe and Ed Dahm under the name "Mike's Minit Man."
The headquarters of Crew Carwash will be in Indianapolis, while Mike's Carwash moves to Cincinnati.
Both companies will continue to honor existing tickets and coupons bought under the Mike's Carwash name.
