7th District Congressional Race Tightening?

POSTED: 4:03 pm EDT October 20, 2006

An Indiana congressional seat thought to be a lock for the incumbent might be up for grabs, if a new poll is to be believed.

A poll done by an Iowa-based company showed 7th district U.S. Rep. Julia Carson trailing Republican challenger Eric Dickerson.

The poll shows Dickerson with 45 percent of the vote and Carson with 42 percent. Another 13 percent of respondents said they will vote for another candidate or don't know yet who they will vote for.

6News political analyst and WXNT radio host Abdul Hakim-Shabazz said the race is much closer than anyone might have thought and that Dickerson doesn't have to gain too much ground to win.

"Some polls have them tied. Some polls a while back had him 20 points behind," Hakim-Shabazz said. "Whichever poll you believe, he's already got 45- to 46 percent of the vote already to start with. So, you really don't have to do that much more work. Just make yourself seen and make your voice heard."

On his radio show Friday afternoon, WTLC radio host Amos Brown said the poll was faulty and that black voters were vastly underrepresented in the sample.
