Police said they believe a woman made a genuine plea for help at a pay phone outside this neighborhood clubhouse in eastern Putnam County. Authorities didn't find the caller Friday.

Police Seek Woman Who Made Panicked 911 Call

Before Connection Ended, Caller Indicated Someone Was After Her

POSTED: 10:55 pm EST November 17, 2006

Police said they're trying to determine what happened to a woman who frantically told a 911 dispatcher that someone was about to attack her in an eastern Putnam County community on Friday afternoon.

The woman called 911 at about 12:30 p.m. from a pay phone outside a clubhouse in the Heritage Lake area several miles east of Greencastle. Sounding out of breath, she indicated that someone -- identifying him only as "he" -- was in her car and about to run her over.

After the caller said where she was, the dispatcher asked for her name. Instead of giving her name, the caller said, "He's coming toward me right now," and the connection ended.

Police went to the clubhouse but did not find the caller. Putnam County Sheriff Mark Frisbie said he believes the call was not a prank, but a genuine call for help.

"This woman is clearly in trouble. What kind of trouble, we don't know," Frisbie told 6News' Ericka Flye. "Is it her boyfriend? Ex-husband? Current husband? Someone totally unknown? We don't have any information."

Investigators took the receiver from the pay phone to check for fingerprints or some other evidence.

"We can't just let (the call) go," Frisbie said. "It's our responsibility to track this down and see what's going on."

Police said the clubhouse was closed when the woman made the call. She might have sought shelter there, only to find herself shut out, they said.

People in the neighborhood were unnerved by news of the incident.

"This is pretty alarming," Heritage Lake resident Robin Howland said. "A lot of people are very shook up about it."

Anyone with information about the caller can contact the Putnam County Sheriff's Department at 765-653-5115.
