The Super 70 project involves a six-mile stretch of Interstate 70, from its north split with I-65 in downtown Indianapolis to the east leg of I-465. Major construction is scheduled to begin in late February.

Changes Expected For 'Super 70' Construction Project

People who travel Interstate 70 on Indianapolis' east side and businesses in that area could get some welcomed news later this week.

The Indiana Department of Transportation said on Monday that it has a revised plan for a big repair project that won't involve closing so many interchanges at once, 6News' Norman Cox reported.

'Super 70' Changes On The Way?

Preparation work is already under way for the project, which will rebuild a portion of I-70 from the ground up. Travel troubles are slated to begin in February, when the original plan called for three consecutive interchanges, Shadeland, Emerson and Keystone avenues, to be closed for up to 10 months.

INDOT said the restrictions are necessary to protect workers, but businesses such as Major Tool and Machine said it will hurt them badly by making it more difficult for trucks to get in and out of the business.

Employees worried that the work will make it harder for them to get to their jobs.

"I have to come to work and get off at the I-70-Rural Street, Keystone exit," said employee Dean Langley. You've got an option to go one way or the other, but when they close down both exits and the side streets underneath the overpass, it makes it difficult to get to work."

When Gov. Mitch Daniels recently appeared on Amos Brown's show on WTLC radio, a caller complained that the project would have a devastating impact on a largely black part of town. Daniels agreed and said he had asked INDOT to revise its plan.

The department declined to divulge details on Monday but said it will have a revised plan to present to business owners this week.

Holiday Inn manager Barry Barenfanger said anything that loosens up the ramp closures some will be a major help to business.

"We just asked them to relook at the plan and come up with a better way, especially with getting off the ramp," Barenfanger said.
