Police are looking for two guns that belong to an Indianapolis police officer after the guns were stolen from the officer's squad car Wednesday night.

The theft happened at about 8 p.m. outside a church in the Fountain Square area on the city's south side, 6News' Julie Pursley reported.

Police Want Officer's Stolen Rifles Back

Investigators said the officer's car and others were broken into. The rifles were in the trunk of the officer's cruiser. One of them was a military-style semiautomatic M-16, one of several hundred IPD got from the military about two years ago. The other stolen weapon was a small-caliber rifle.

Police said the officer was attending a church function when the theft occurred and that the weapons had been properly stored in the vehicle.

Indianapolis police said they want the stolen weapons returned.
