11-Year-Old Boy Critically Injured In Shooting

Police: Boy Shot At Neighbor's Home

An 11-year-old boy was critically injured in a shooting at a home in southern Vermillion County on Monday.

Indiana State Police said the boy was shot at a rural home on South Circle Road in the southern part of the county about 10:30 a.m.

"Emergency responders arrived and found the victim … had sustained a gunshot wound to the head," said ISP Sgt. Joe Watts. "He was immediately taken to the Union Hospital of Clinton and later transferred to Methodist Hospital (in Indianapolis) by air ambulance."

Watts said the victim, Chandler Strayer, was at a neighbor's home with two other boys, ages 10 and 15, when the shooting happened.

"Investigators are looking into the possibility that the victim was handling a loaded handgun he allegedly found in the master bedroom when the firearm suddenly discharged," Watts said.

Police declined to release additional information.
