Indy Fans Get Chance To See, Touch, Take Picture With Lombardi Trophy

INDIANAPOLIS -- Thousands of Indianapolis Colts fans are taking advantage of an opportunity to see and touch the winning symbol of the Super Bowl, the Vince Lombardi Trophy.The Colts are taking the trophy on a 50-city tour, which began on Friday at the Meijer store on Indianapolis' south side, 6News' Julie Pursley reported.Fans lined up early for their chance to "make it personal," as the Colts' mantra goes.Andrew Wenzel was first in line for the tour. He arrived at 6 a.m. to ensure he would get to touch the pinnacle of pro football greatness."I always watched the Super Bowl, even when I was little. I always wanted to hold the trophy. I just figured this would be my only chance," Wenzel said.Thousands of fans are anticipated at stops all over Indiana, Kentucky and Illinois. On the first day of the tour, many brought cameras to capture the first-time experience for the Colts' 12th man.The trophy, named in honor of legendary Green Bay Packers coach Vince Lombardi, is made entirely of sterling silver. It's valued at $25,000, but it's priceless to Colts fans. That's why there are four guards watching it.The team and coach Tony Dungy said it's a chance to bring the trophy to the people to which it belongs.Dungy kept it at his home for four days and has a new appreciation for how special it is."My son, youngest son, had the chance to sleep with it overnight," Dungy said. We want to be able to share it with fans and couldn't think of a better way to do it.""I've been wanting to see it. It's beautiful," gushed fan Jody Erlenbaugh. "I'm so happy for the Colts.
