A Ball State student was killed and a man was injured in a crash in which the student was driving the wrong way on Interstate 69 early Monday morning.

Police said the student, Andrea Tallant, 19, of Westfield, stopped at a convenience store at about 1:15 a.m. and appeared to have been intoxicated, according to people who had contact with her. The clerk working at the store said the woman came in to use the restroom and left.

"Another lady who came in said ... directly as the girl was leaving ... she was getting on the expressway the wrong way," said clerk Shirley Gee.

Investigators said Tallant left the convenience store and got on I-69, attempting to go north in the southbound lanes. About 3 miles north of the State Road 332 ramp, at mile marker 45, Tallant hit an SUV head-on and was hit by a semitrailer.

"We received multiple calls that she was travelling on the wrong side of the interstate," said Delaware County sheriff's Cpl. John Holding. "You're travelling along the interstate at 70 mph and a car's coming at you at 70 mph. There's not a lot of time to react."

Police said Tallant was killed on impact. The man in the SUV, Johnathon Brown, 27, of Indianapolis was transported to Ball Memorial Hospital, which didn't immediately release his condition. The driver of the semitrailer, Troy Pritchard, 66, of Michigan, was not injured.

Investigators said they were working to determine if Tallant was driving without lights on. They are also awaiting toxicology test results.

Southbound I-69 was closed between state roads 332 and 28 for about four hours following the crash.
