Friends of a Ball State University student killed in a crash as she drove the wrong way on Interstate 69 early Monday morning said the woman might have been on painkillers at the time of the crash.

Andrea Tallant, 19, of Westfield, was killed and Jonathon Brown, 27, of Indianapolis was injured when Tallant's car slammed into Brown's SUV and was hit by a tractor-trailer near Muncie.

Investigators said Tallant's car hit the SUV head-on as the two vehicles went in opposite directions.

Witnesses said Tallant got on I-69 the wrong way, possibly without headlights on, after she stopped to use the restroom at a gas station at the State Road 332 interchange.

Several people told police that Tallant appeared to be intoxicated. Tallant's online profile had a comment that she had recently had surgery. Friends speculated that she might have been on painkillers at the time of the crash.

Messages in Tallant's memory flooded into her profile just hours after the crash.

Andrea Tallant's red Mitsubishi was a mangled mess after the crash.

"It's just an awful thing how easily life can be taken away," said student Trisha Ulmer. "I can't even imagine losing anybody in that sort of situation."

"A lot of the girls are really upset about it and they went out for dinner to remember her," said student Eddie Garwick.

Officials said they are awaiting results of toxicology tests and other tests to determine if the headlights were on or off at the time of the crash.

Brown, who was taken to Methodist Hospital, was listed in fair condition Monday night. The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured.
