Police said a woman who was sitting in a chair in her apartment on Indianapolis' east side was killed by a stray bullet fired by one of two groups of arguing men.

Investigators found Jamitra Mitchell, 22, dead in her apartment in the 10000 block of John Marshall Drive at about 9:50 p.m. Saturday. Police think the bullet came through a window and hit the victim as she sat in a chair.

Police said Mitchell's three children, ages 1, 3 and 4, were also in the apartment but were not harmed.

Indianapolis Metro police said two groups of men were arguing at a basketball court just south of the victim's apartment.

The argument escalated, leading to one group chasing and shooting at the other group, police said.

"When I went in there, I just saw her sitting in the chair like execution-style, right in the middle of her head," said neighbor Janica Nowling. "It was real sad because the kids were hitting on her saying, 'Mommy, please wake up.'"

Investigators don't have a description of the shooter, but said they believe he is young and black.

The victim's family took custody of the children. They told police that Mitchell had just moved into the apartment complex this week.

Police asked anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS.
