INDIANAPOLIS -- A candlelight vigil was held Tuesday night to remember a mother who was fatally shot in front of her children late last week.A stray bullet took the life of Jamitra Mitchell, 22, as she sat in her apartment in the 10000 block of John Marshall Drive. Mitchell had three children and was pregnant with a fourth, 6News' Ericka Flye reported. The person who fired the shot that killed Mitchell remains loose, and police don't have much information with which to track him down. The family wants the gunman to pay for shattering their lives.
"It's hard because she was supposed to take care of me when I got older," said Lillie Vaugn, Mitchell's mother.Mitchell's three small children, ages 4, 3 and 1, witnessed their mother's killing at her Amber Woods apartment.Investigators said a fight broke out at a basketball court nearby and shots rang out. A bullet from the gunfire pierced Mitchell's window and struck her in the head. The vigil hoped to focus attention on Mitchell's senseless killing and renew an effort to stop the violence."This is my family, and if it happened to you, you would want somebody to … tell somebody," said Sandia Bailey, Mitchell's cousin.A fund has been set up in Jamitra Mitchell's name to help with the family's expenses. Donations can be made at any Huntington Bank branch.Mitchell's funeral is Friday at noon at Lavenia, Smith and Summers funeral home on East 38th Street.Police asked anyone with information about the shooting to call Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS.
