INDIANAPOLIS -- An Indianapolis mother and son were sentenced Friday in connection with a child molestation case that prosecutors said included a brutal assault.
Wayne Likens, 18, who was a previously convicted sex offender, received a 20-year sentence for criminal deviate conduct in connection with the Aug. 7, 2001 attack.
Ivy Likens, 42, was sentenced Friday to seven years in prison on a charge of neglect.
Ivy Likens was the child's babysitter, and had left Likens and his two brothers alone in their home with the girl while she delivered lunch to her husband, authorities said.
The judge said that was irresponsible.
"This is one of the worst physical attacks on a child," Deputy Prosecutor Kristina Korobov said. "Every day we see sexual abuse in the community that leaves no physical evidence, and when there is no evidence, people doubt that it happens. The truth is, most sex violence leaves no physical scars. But, the emotional scars are just as significant as the scars on this child's body physically."
Meanwhile, one of the other two boys, who is 15 years old, is still awaiting trial.
The 13-year-old was sent earlier to a secure residential facility for sex offenders, according to RTV6 reporter Derrik Thomas.
The parents of the victim testified that their child still has nightmares and is undergoing counseling.
