Pit Bull Tears Into Child, Attacks Others

Witnesses: Dog Attacked Several

POSTED: 7:32 am EDT May 16, 2007

An 11-year-old girl narrowly escaped serious injury in a pit bull attack earlier this week on Indianapolis' east side.

Witnesses said the dog also went after another child and two adults before being subdued, 6News' Renee Jameson reported.

Lanikki Members said a neighbor's pit bull attacked her as she went to remind a classmate about a school project.

"I didn't know what was going to happen," Members said. "I knew not to go on his porch because his dog always comes to the door."

"The dog came to the door … and he tried to stop the dog from coming out, and the dog came out and I tried to run, but he got me in the grass."

The dog bit Members' ankle, but she was able to break free. Members said the dog then tried to chase her again.

"I ran on the bus and she shut the door real hard," Members said.

Members' cousin, Jerald Hoskis, saw the incident.

"It bit her on the ankle and she was bleeding … and crying, so she ran on the bus," Hoskis said. "After that, he started chasing me, and I jumped over that gate and told my grandma."

Witnesses said the dog knocked down another man and bit him. When an animal control officer arrived, the dog tried to bite him, too.

The officer fired a tranquilizer at the pit bull, which was captured and taken to Animal Care and Control.

Members had to have stitches in her ankle, but she's expected to fully recover.

"Thank God she's alright. She is going to be sore, but she's alright," said Susie Hoskis, Members' aunt.

Animal control officials are investigating the incident. There was no immediate word if the animal will be euthanized.

The owner faces multiple citations and more than $1,000 in fines.
