Indy Readies Super Bowl Pitch

Indianapolis Prepares Special Presentation In Hopes Of Securing 2011 Game

UPDATED: 1:34 pm EDT May 21, 2007

A year's worth of planning will come down to just 15 minutes Tuesday when the city gets to make its last pitch to host the 2011 Super Bowl at an NFL owners meeting in Nashville, Tenn.

Owners on Tuesday will decide who will get the privilege of having Super Bowl 45. City leaders were in final-push mode Friday and over the weekend.

Two members of Indianapolis' team left for Nashville Sunday afternoon confident that they have a good shot of bringing the game home.

"I feel really confident in our bid, not necessarily confident that we will win," said Fred Glass, president of Indianapolis 2011 Inc. "We don't know if we're going to win or lose, but I'm confident we're going to have a great bid, a great presentation, put our best foot forward and, with Indianapolis behind us, I really think we're going to win."

They have raised almost all of the $20 million needed. They've raised awareness and, in the process, raised plenty of hopes.

"We've got the experience and the festival atmosphere that's hard to beat," said Indianapolis Mayor Bart Peterson Friday.

Peterson will not get to share his enthusiasm in person with NFL owners. The league decided it didn't want any elected officials involved. The mayor will be part of a video presentation, which was taped Friday.

Glass said he's focused on the three "Vs" -- venues, volunteers and vitality. He hopes those elements will spell "V" for victory on Tuesday.

"There's been a lot of people skeptical and cynical, even around here, about our chances. For whatever reason, good or bad, I've felt confident that we're going to put on an excellent bid, an excellent game," Glass said. "I've only got more confident as the process has gone on."

The NCAA is bolstering Indianapolis' bid by telling the NFL how hospitable Indianapolis can be. Last year, Indianapolis hosted the men's college basketball Final Four.

Glass and four people the city won't reveal will make the offer in-person to the 32 NFL team owners. They will leave Sunday, rehearse their presentation, meet with league representatives Monday, go over changes and then submit the document Monday night.

Tuesday, two of the group's chosen speakers get just 15 minutes to make their case.

"I think it'll be a whiz-bang presentation to keep the attention of the owners," Glass said.

Indianapolis is vying with Dallas and Phoenix for the honor of hosting the game.

6News' Ray Cortopassi will be in Nashville to cover Indianapolis' efforts to host the 2011 Super Bowl.
