Friday marked one year since three children and four adults were fatally shot at a home on Indianapolis' east side.

Alberto Covarrubias, his wife, Emma Valdez, and their two boys were killed. Also killed at 560 Hamilton Ave. were Valdez's son Magno Albarran, her daughter Flora Albarran, and Flora's 5-year-old son.

James Stewart and Desmond Turner are both charged with murder and are awaiting trial, set for later this year.

The St. Clair Place neighborhood association held a memorial Friday afternoon outside the Hamilton Avenue home, where no one has lived since the killings. Neighbors, politicans and police attended.

Organizers released seven balloons, representing the seven victims. James Beaver, a friend of the slain family, was one of the people who signed a banner that was put on a fence outside the house.

"It's senseless," Beaver said of the killings. "It's something that shouldn't happen, and something that should never happen again."

A memorial service also was scheduled to be held at St. Philip Neri church, located in the 500 block of North Rural Avenue, at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
