Indianapolis Mayor Bart Peterson is set to make a major announcement Wednesday about an initiative to raise the county's income tax to fund public safety.

The focus of the plan will be trying to get criminals off the streets and making the city safer, 6News' Julie Pursley reported.

Details will be revealed in a speech Peterson will deliver at 12:30 p.m. TheIndyChannel.com plans to stream that speech live.

The mayor will unveil what he calls the future of crimefighting. Indianapolis has been plagued by violent crime recently. In 2006, the city neared a homicide record.

Peterson also plans to address the future financial stability of the Indianapolis metropolitan area.

It is believed that the plan will earmark $85 million for public safety, funding for which will come from an increase in the Marion County option tax that could cost an individual making $50,000 a year an additional $375 a year in taxes.
