Police: Girl Found Dead In Apartment Was Slain

Investigators Say Girl's Killing Wasn't Random Act

Police said a girl found slain at an apartment complex early Friday morning was a homicide victim.

Police were called to the 400 block of North Mapleton Street just after 3 a.m., where they found the girl, identified as Chelsea Porter, 14, (pictured) had been fatally stabbed in an apartment.

Investigators said they were following up on leads and speaking with several people of interest, 6News' Ben Morriston reported.

"We are tracking down all of the leads. We have canvassed the neighborhoods. We've talked to everybody who is involved that knows the persons, people that live in the apartment complex," said Columbus police Lt. Steve Norman.

People who live in the area said they fear for their safety.

"It kind of worries me because I have a 9-year-old son myself," said Randy Lopotoskor, who lives nearby. "I moved here from Kentucky. My brother's been telling me, 'Watch out for the city. It's changed.'"

Officials said they do not think the girl's killing was a random incident but they asked anyone with information to call Columbus police at 812-376-2600.
