The Greenfield Post Office is closed as officials set up a mobile command center to search for a mail carrier who disappeared Wednesday morning.

Officials said John Jordan, 48, (pictured) started his route on Wednesday but disappeared.

Jordan's postal van was found a few blocks from the Hancock County courthouse, at Chestnut and Sycamore lanes. Mail was delivered to the first home on the route, and the van was found locked with the rest of the mail inside.

Jordan, a 20-year employee of the postal service, normally walks his route. According to police, there is no evidence of foul play.

"I just really, truly don't know what happened," said Irene Jester, who knows Jordan. "We came home last night at 7 o'clock and they had this roped off and they brought out the search dogs and everything. (He's) one of the nicest people."

Postal officials said the office's business will be conducted by other nearby post offices and that people will get their mail, including items that were in the van.

Postal inspectors from Detroit are being called in to investigate the disappearance. Search crews combed wooded areas near the van in search of Jordan.

The photo of Jordan is from September 2006. Jordan is about 5 feet 11 inches tall and 170 pounds. He wears glasses and has a beard.

Police asked anyone with information about Jordan to call the U.S. Postal Service inspections office at 317-328-2530.
