INDIANAPOLIS -- He is one of the most important members of Indiana Task Force 1, and now he is the one in need of some help. Logos, a 6-year-old FEMA-certified search-and-rescue dog who has undergone hours of grueling training, recently suffered a spinal injury. "He is a very valuable tool with a great work ethic. He is just a really nice dog," Task Force 1 canine training director Anne McCurdy said. "Some dogs take the test and never pass, but Logos passed on his first time."
Logos and his handler, Jackie McCarty, have been on several deployments with the task force, including hurricanes Katrina and Rita. In April, Logos passed his certification test again, but a month later tragedy struck. "She was throwing the ball for him just playing ball with him when he just fell to the ground crying," McCurdy told 6News reporter Jennifer Carmack. Logos' entire hind end was paralyzed from a ruptured disk in his spine. It was an injury that required surgery to repair. Logos is undergoing a great deal of rehabilitation, including acupuncture and water treadmill training. "Mentally he is all fired up -- wants to come back. His right leg is doing pretty good but he still drags his left one some," McCurdy said. Expenses from his injury have so far reached close to $4,000, costs not covered by FEMA, but by his handler Jackie. McCurdy said she’s doing everything she can to bring him back and hopefully he will be a disaster dog again. If you would like to help with Logos' expenses, contact Anne at amccurdy@intf1curt.org.
