Behrman Suspect Faces New Charges

Authorities Attempt To Keep Man Jailed As Probe Continues

A suspect in the disappearance of a Indiana University student -- eligible for bail Saturday on unrelated charges -- now faces new charges in Monroe County.

Uriah Clouse, 26, of Ellettsville, was charged Friday with attempted criminal confinement and battery -- counts that are not related to the disappearance of Indiana University student Jill Behrman, according to Monroe County judge Elizabeth Mann.

Friday's charges stem from a woman's allegations that she was attacked outside an Ellettsville Bigfoot gas station on June 13, 2000.

The woman implicated Clouse after she saw his picture in a newspaper this week, authorities said.

The new charges come as investigators are trying to keep Clouse -- identified as a suspect but not charged in Behrman's May 2000 disappearance -- in jail as the Behrman investigation continues.

Clouse (pictured, left) is in the Brown County Jail, where he is serving a sentence for invasion of privacy that is set to expire Saturday. He would need to post bond to leave that jail, though, because of misdemeanor charges on accusations that he fought while in custody.

A Brown County judge Friday increased Clouse's bail bond from $3,500 to $25,000, two days after the county prosecutor requested a higher bond.

The higher bond and the new charges make Clouse's release Saturday unlikely, RTV6's Sarah Fraidin reported. Clouse still was at the Brown County Jail on Saturday morning, an employee there said.

On an audio tape of a bail hearing Wednesday, FBI agent Gary Dunn can be heard testifying that Clouse told people at a Bloomington nightclub details of Behrman's disappearance, Fraidin reported.

"(Clouse) has told other individuals at a nightclub in Bloomington, Indiana, the details as to where it happened, how it happened, and why there was no aid rendered to her -- all of which are corroborated by other investigations," Dunn said.

Behrman (pictured, right), 19 when she disappeared, was last seen riding her bike near Bloomington in May 2000, and investigators suspect foul play.

Dunn also called Clouse a suspect almost four months ago in a letter to the Brown County prosecutor.

In the motion to increase bond, filed last week, Clouse also is accused of "making threats to kill persons who have been interviewed by the FBI related to an ongoing Bloomington murder investigation."

At the hearing Wednesday, Clouse told the judge that "I do not want to hurt nobody."

"I have nothing to worry about ... I have a clear heart on that," Clouse said.
