INDIANAPOLIS -- A doctor has been using an Indianapolis address to ship illegal prescriptions all over the U.S. via the Internet, authorities said on Thursday. The Attorney General's Office said Mohamed Mekaway is behind a Web site, usachoicemeds.com, that offers a fountain of illegal prescription drugs.State regulators said Mekaway used his Indiana medical license number to get prescription sleep aids and muscle relaxants, such as Soma and Tramadol, which require a federal license that he apparently does not have, Call 6's Rafael Sanchez reported.
Over the past two months, Mekaway has been involved with 1,500 illegal prescriptions to 43 states, authorities said. One overdose was reported to officials stemming from those prescriptions. An ad for the Web site was recently featured prominently in the National Enquirer.Officials said Mekaway did not physically see patients before dispensing drugs. His Indianapolis address, 8605 Allisonville Road, is home to a Mail Boxes, Etc store."A doctor has no way of verifying what symptoms you present. So, if you put faulty information into the computer and a doctor issues a prescription based on that information, it could be dangerous to your health," said Libby Kiefner, deputy attorney general. The Medical Licensing Board of Indiana on Thursday suspended Mekaway's license for 90 days.Regulators have not yet decided if they will take action against the Web site, which is still in operation.Mekaway also holds medical licenses in Ohio, Michigan and South Carolina.Indiana regulators have received complaints about him from Arkansas and California.
