A girl was killed and a man was injured in a crash that ended a chase that involved Indiana State Police in which the driver exceeded 120 mph, police said.

According to police, Brandee Siples, 17, of Brazil, was a passenger in a 1992 Chevrolet Camaro, driven by Cody Wright, 18, also of Brazil.

Indiana State Police said a trooper saw the Camaro westbound on U.S. 40 in Putnamville, and clocked its speed at 117 mph in a 45 mph zone at about 10:40 a.m. Saturday.

Another trooper gave chase after the Camaro sped around the officer, who was forced to swerve into another lane to avoid a collision, according to ISP.

The Camaro hit speeds as high as 129 mph and went onto County Road 900 West, a rural highway, maintaining a speed of up to 90 mph, ISP officials said.

Troopers said the driver lost control, went up an embankment, into the air and hit several trees, landing in a 20-foot ravine about two miles south of U.S. 40.

The impact of the crash cut a 17-inch tree in half, police said.

Both Siples and Wright were wearing seat belts, but the force of the crash killed Siples. Wright was taken by medical helicopter to Wishard Memorial Hospital in Indianapolis with serious injuries.

The chase and crash remain under investigation.
