Man Arrested In Cab Driver's Death

INDIANAPOLIS -- Police have arrested a man following the death of a taxicab driver whose body was found in his cab on Indianapolis' east side Wednesday morning.Kenneth R. Bartley, who was supposed to be under house arrest but was missing, was taken into custody late Wednesday night and arrested early Thursday morning after he was questioned about the death of Herbert "Chuck" Coomer, 53, police said.

Coomer's body was found in the back seat of the cab, which was parked outside the property where Bartley lives in the 6100 block of East 30th Street, according to police.Blood was found on the trunk and the doors of the car. Police didn't say what caused the death."It looks traumatic, but that's all we know," Indianapolis police Detective Mike Mitchell said.Coomer's employer, A&T Cab Co., said he disappeared at about 1:30 a.m., when he was supposed to pick up a customer.The driver's colleagues went looking for him Wednesday morning because he failed to return from that run. At about 9:40 a.m., one of them found the taxi, with the body inside, in front of a vacant house on 30th Street, police said.Bartley, 47, lives in a garage-turned-apartment on that property, police said. Information on why Bartley had been under house arrest wasn't available.
