INDIANAPOLIS -- A man and his girlfriend were arrested in connection with the death of her 3-year-old daughter, who investigators believe had been beaten several times in recent days, police said.Lawrence Green and Charity Bailey, both 20, were arrested Tuesday afternoon on charges of murder and neglect of a dependent in connection with the death of Tajanay Bailey.Tajanay was pronounced dead at Methodist Hospital about 30 minutes after medics picked her up from an Indianapolis apartment, where Charity Bailey called 911 because the child had stopped breathing, police said.
The cause of death wasn't immediately determined, but it appeared to have been "severe physical trauma," police said in a news release.Bailey told investigators that Green, who lived with her in the apartment, had beaten the girl several times, according to police. Police said they believe the girl was beaten daily in recent days.Police said Charity Bailey, who is pregnant and also has a 6-month-old son, called 911 from the Phoenix apartments on Indianapolis' northeast side at about 6 a.m. Tajanay was unresponsive when medics arrived, police said.Police arrested Bailey and Green (both pictured, above) after interviewing them.Bailey's 6-month son was placed into the custody of child welfare officials.Police told 6News' Jack Rinehart that child welfare workers had previously taken the children away from Bailey because they questioned whether she was fit to parent them, but the kids were returned to her four weeks ago. Bailey and Green were to have gone to court Tuesday to finalize custody, police said.Police said Green is from Alabama and has no prior criminal history in Indiana.
