INDIANAPOLIS -- Jessica Pippin says she didn't know the fire at her home had hurt her until after she and a friend got her 20-month-old son to safety.Pippin (pictured) was being treated for serious burns at Indianapolis' Wishard Memorial Hospital on Thursday, a day after she awoke just before dawn to see her house in western Indiana was on fire, 6News' Ray Cortopassi reported."If I would have woken up 30 seconds later, I might not have made it to his room," the Covington woman recalled, referring to where her son, Aidan, had been sleeping.
Pippin said she got out of bed, ran to Aidan's room, took him from his crib and raced to a window. She fell on the way and burned her arms, which nevertheless protected Aidan."I had him wrapped in his blanket, and some of his blanket was melted to my pants," Pippin said.Pippin managed to get Aidan to a friend who had been sleeping in another room. All three got out of a window. Then, Pippin said, she realized she was burned in several places."I didn't even know that I was burned until I got in the car," she said. The fire destroyed the house and killed a cat and a dog. Investigators hadn't determined the fire's cause Thursday.Pippin may need a skin graft, Cortopassi reported. She will stay with relatives after she leaves the hospital.
