Police Not Sure What Led To Death

A man was killed Friday afternoon when he apparently became trapped under a tractor mower on Indianapolis' northwest side.

The incident happened at about 2:20 p.m. at the Marion County Fish and Game Association gun range, in the 7000 block of Crawfordsville Road.

Indianapolis Metropolitan police said James Stephens, 71, appeared to have been operating the tractor in a driveway and might have fallen off as he checked the area of the mower deck.

Police said the mower deck was not being used at the time of the incident.

A neighbor noticed the tractor on top of the victim and called police. Officials said they have not found anyone who saw what happened.

Officers said they were told that Stephens was the caretaker for the association and that it was the first day the mower had been used.
