About 30 people at a north-side Indianapolis school were checked at hospitals after a large fire engulfed an ambulance maintenance facility Wednesday morning.

The fire, which started at about 10 a.m., destroyed the maintenance facility at 4132 N. Rural St., officials said.

Students were evacuated from the Charles A. Tindley Accelerated School, a charter school in the 3900 block of Meadows Drive, because smoke got into the school's ventilation system.

Some of those who were taken to hospitals suffered from smoke inhalation. None of the injuries was believed to be serious, 6News' Rick Hightower reported.

Children who were not taken to hospitals were taken to the Washington Park Family Center, where parents were told to come pick them up.

"There were approximately 350 students at the school," Indianapolis fire Capt. Gregg Harris said.

Three ambulances were destroyed in the fire, which was brought under control just before noon. Other working ambulances were taken out before the fire spread, officials said.

The structure, owned by the Health and Hospital Corp. of Marion County, served as a maintenance facility for Wishard Memorial Hospital's ambulance service.

Fire officials Wednesday afternoon didn't know the fire's cause, but they had ruled out arson, the HHCMC said.

An electrical fuse box problem was reported in the garage at 11 p.m. Tuesday. Officials were not immediately sure if that incident was connected to the fire.

Aerial units had a difficult time battling the blaze because of the cold air and a brisk wind.

The Charles A. Tindley Accelerated School will be closed Thursday. Another nearby school, the Challenge Foundation Academy, will delay the start of classes Thursday by two hours.
