Thieves Stealing Churches' Air Conditioning Units

20 Churches Targeted Since Start Of Year

POSTED: 8:54 pm EST February 12, 2008

At Vision of Christ Church -- one of 20 Indianapolis churches where thieves have stolen air conditioning units since Jan. 1 -- trustee Bernadine Brown is upset.

"You don't do that to God's house. They're going to have to answer for it in the end," Brown told 6News' Jack Rinehart.

Two units were stolen Saturday from Vision of Christ Church -- one of three churches on the city's north or northeast sides that were targeted by air conditioning thieves that day. Police believe the thieves are selling the aluminum and copper found in the units, citing a high worldwide demand for recyclable metals.

Air conditioning units also have been stolen from 21 north-side Indianapolis businesses or homes since the start of the year, police said.

Of the 20 Indianapolis churches that have been targeted this year, 10 are in the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department's north district, police said.

Police said they don't have any suspects.

"What makes it difficult is that there aren't as many ... good residents out this time of year to help be the eyes and ears of the police," Indianapolis police Maj. John Conley said.
