Investigators: Smoking Led To Fatal Noblesville Fire

Woman Who Died Identified As 70-Year-Old

POSTED: 3:53 pm EST February 26, 2008

Discarded smoking material caused a fire that killed a 70-year-old Noblesville woman at a duplex over the weekend, the Noblesville Fire Department said Tuesday.

Jane F. Cardoza died of inhalation of soot and superheated air as a result of the fire in her home in the 400 block of Woodview Drive on Saturday night, the fire department said.

The fire started in a living room chair in which Cardoza's body was found, according to the department. Cardoza had lived by herself in the home for many years.

Two 911 callers alerted the fire department to the blaze just before 9:30 p.m. Saturday.

Damage to the duplex was estimated at $50,000.
