Boy May Have Been Hurt As Parents Fought, Police Say

INDIANAPOLIS -- A man and his girlfriend were arrested this week after medical personnel found their 6-week-old son had broken bones and other injuries -- some of which he may have suffered as his parents fought each other, police said.Todd Spears, 19, of Indianapolis, was arrested on preliminary charges of battery and aggravated battery after his girlfriend, Simone Hamilton, brought their infant son to an doctor's office to report that a large bruise on his leg wasn't healing, authorities said.The doctor believed the boy had been seriously injured and called police. Medical personnel eventually determined the boy had fractured ribs, broken bones in his feet and legs, a broken left arm and a torn upper lip, police said.
The boy also had injuries consistent with having been violently shaken, according to police.Hamilton, 19, of Indianapolis, was arrested on a preliminary charge of neglect."The boyfriend has made indications that he did squeeze the child and that maybe he had shaken the child a little. This may even have been observed by the mother," Indianapolis police Lt. Jeff Duhamell told 6News' Derrik Thomas.Police also said the boy may have been injured as his parents scuffled with each other.The boy was being treated Wednesday at Riley Hospital for Children, where his condition was described as being stable.Spears was being held Wednesday with bond set at $50,000. Hamilton was being held with bond set at $15,000.
