Candidates Vying For 7th District Seat Lay It On Line

Historic Special Election Nears

Campaigning is reaching a fever pitch with an historic special election to fill the 7th Congressional District seat just days away.

Democrat Andre Carson and Republican Jon Elrod spent the weekend on the campaign trail and got little sleep as the race winds to a close, 6News' Tanya Spencer reported.

Both candidates are concentrating on undecided voters.

Elrod spent Sunday working the phones between campaign stops. He and volunteers made tens of thousands of phone calls in hopes of drumming up support for Tuesday's election.

"We've run on two planks the whole way through. The first one is fiscal reform -- getting rid of the bridges to nowhere, the pork-barrel spending, and focusing on what's really important to us, like fully funding Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid," Elrod said.

Carson made plenty of stops on Sunday, including some at churches, to spread his campaign message.

"The undecideds are leaning toward us because they love our message on Social Security, bringing our troops home, universal health care and our failing economy," Carson said. "They want the jobs back here in Indiana."

Libertarian Sean Shepard has also been out delivering his campaign message in Marion County.

After Tuesday's election, the candidates will get little if any break from campaigning. The primary for the same seat is just eight weeks away.

Both men are trying to finish out the term of the late Congresswoman Julia Carson.

If turnout is low Tuesday, that could bode badly for Carson, who has name recognition and more campaign cash.
