INDIANAPOLIS -- Sen. Hillary Clinton plans several stops in Indiana on Thursday, fresh on the heels of Sen. Barack Obama's campaign trip to central Indiana Saturday as the state's role in the Democratic presidential primary heats up.Clinton plans to kick off her campaign trip in Terre Haute with supporter Sen. Evan Bayh, who is considered as a possible running mate should Clinton win the Democratic nomination. Her campaign said she plans other stops in the state on the same day, but those details were not immediately released.
Indiana, with its 72 delegates, could be a deciding state in who ultimately wins the Democratic nomination. With the nominee far from determined, Indiana could help choose the winner for the first time in 40 years.Indiana is considered a swing state for both candidates. It is believed Obama could have an advantage in northwestern Indiana, near Chicago, and in the Indianapolis area. Clinton is thought to be the favorite in other parts of the state."I think the message Clinton is going to give to Hoosier voters about being ready on day one is going to resonate with voters," said Dan Parker, Indiana Democratic Party chair.Clinton and Obama are expected to make many more stops in Indiana as the primary nears, and they are expected to begin dumping some campaign cash in the state."I am looking forward to both of them coming because both of them have key issues that ... this country and this state need to work on," said William Stockton, an undecided Democrat.Clinton campaign officials said she plans to focus on economic issues pertaining to middle class Hoosiers during her stop.
