Man Charged With Stealing VA Hospital Computers

Machines Had Information On 11,000 Patients, Officials Say

POSTED: 4:58 pm EDT March 18, 2008

A Speedway man has been arrested on suspicion of stealing computers containing information on more than 11,000 patients from a Veterans Administration hospital, officials said Tuesday.

Joseph A. Radican, 50, has been charged with felony theft in the November break-in at the Roudebush VA Medical Center in Indianapolis. Three computers, two monitors, one printer and a keyboard were stolen. The computers have not been recovered.

Indianapolis police spokesman Sgt. Paul Thompson said Radican turned himself in Monday and was released on his own recognizance. He was scheduled to appear in court on April 15, Thompson said.

There were no published listings for Radican in Indianapolis to obtain comment.

The FBI and the VA's inspector general's office was offering a $10,000 reward for information about the location of the computers and equipment.

VA officials said patient information was protected by passwords, but those whose information might have been stolen were contacted. The Department of Veterans Affairs was also offering one year of free credit monitoring to those affected.

The Department of Veterans affairs said the missing equipment includes a Dell Optiplex GX260 desktop computer, a Dell Optiplex GX620 desktop computer, a Toshiba 6000 laptop computer, two computer monitors (a Dell and a Samsung) and one Hewlett Packard printer.

Anyone with information about the missing items should call the VA's inspector general's office at 800-488-8244, the office said.
