Lightning Strike Damages Indianapolis Home

Bolt Hit House

POSTED: 11:13 am EDT April 4, 2008

A lightning strike damaged a home on Indianapolis' southwest side Friday morning as thunderstorms moved through the area.

The incident happened just before 5 a.m. at a house in the 8500 block of Green Valley Drive, near Bluff Road and Indiana 37.

The family was inside the home at the time.

Lightning hit near a basement window, then traveled throughout the plumbing.

"We heard the loudest clap or roll of thunder that I've ever heard in my life," said Cassandra Schibley, who lives in the home. "At the same exact time, this big orange-yellowish glow (was) right outside our bedroom. My husband, Tom, said 'I smell smoke.'"

The home did not catch fire, but there was substantial damage.

Lightning knocked out the power and some wall panels. No one was injured.
