INDIANAPOLIS -- Police were out with extra gusto Wednesday patrolling some of the city's most dangerous intersections in hopes of curbing speed and crashes.Enforcement was stepped up as part of a team effort involving the Marion County Traffic Safety Partnership and AAA, 6News' Julie Pursley reported. As he made traffic stops and ticketed motorists at 38th Street and North High School Road, Officer James Goddard also tried to educate drivers, reminding them of the seriousness of breaking the law behind the wheel.
One woman did her eyelashes while Goddard wrote her tickets for speeding in a school zone. The woman's license had already been suspended twice.Despite her plea that she had to get to work, the woman's car was towed.Officers are watching at specific intersections for motorists who follow too closely and disregard signs.Milford Britton received a ticket because he made an illegal turn."I guess I need to pay more attention to the signs," Britton said.In addition to 38th Street at High School Road, the intersections targeted Wednesday included:38th Street at Lafayette Road 71st Street at Michigan Road 86th Street at Michigan Road 82nd Street at Allisonville Road Stop 11 Road at U.S. 31 Emerson Avenue at Thompson Road "It's not about generating a lot of tickets. It's about making an area safer," Goddard said.Federal and state grants are funding the added enforcement. The program runs through June.
