Residents Not Sure What To Think Of Quake

Some Report Strange Animal Behavior Before, During Earthquake

Numerous phone calls and e-mails poured in from startled central Indiana residents after a moderate earthquake shook all of Indiana early Friday morning.

People who commented on TheIndyChannel.com's forum shared similar stories of shock and wonder.

Many weren't immediately sure what had happened and turned on their televisions out of curiosity.

Hundreds of people reported odd pet behavior before and during the temblor. Groggy from sleep, some thought their pets were responsible for the ruckus in their homes.

"I live in Broad Ripple … in an apartment building three stories up and was already awake watching channel 6 news in bed when the bed started to slowly shake," wrote one forum commenter. "I thought it was my cat clawing the bed until I realized that the shaking was getting stronger and that my cat is not that strong."

"We live in Bloomington, and the earthquake woke us up -- even my teenage daughter who is hard to get up. My husband and I both sat up in bed looking all around as our house shook and we could hear what sounded like distant thunder," wrote Stephanie Thompson. "Our very large loving pet boxer, named Oliver, is always at our bedside. He looks like he could take on King Kong at ease, but he quickly ran into his large kennel (in our bedroom) as if he wanted to hide."

It was quickly clear to the 6News staff, who were live on the air for "Good Morning Indiana," that something out of the ordinary had happened.

"We just felt a real good shaking here in the studio," said anchor Dan Spehler right after the earthquake ended.

Some people shared stories of having dealt with earthquakes in California.

"The last time I felt that was … in San Francisco," wrote LeaAnne Nash. "When I felt it this morning in Lebanon, I knew immediately what it was."
