INDAINAPOLIS -- The federal government has approved the expansion of a low-cost state insurance program to cover more than 5,000 additional Hoosier children. State lawmakers approved expanding the State Children's Health Insurance Program last year, but federal approval only came three months after the state formally requested it in late January. Although the program now covers more kids in the state's moderate-income households, a key Democratic state lawmaker isn't satisfied.
State Rep. Charlie Brown, D-Gary, said the state must find ways to enroll more Hoosiers not only in the children's insurance program, but also the Healthy Indiana Plan for low-income adults. He said lawmakers might take up the matter in summer study committees.
