Apartment-Thefts Suspect Arrested After Chase

Man Spins Van In Field Before Apprehension

A police officer interviewing a victim in a string of thefts at an east-side Indianapolis apartment complex saw a man matching the thief's description driving away, prompting a chase that led to the driver's arrest Tuesday morning, police said.

Filipe Alvarado, 26, was arrested after a 10-minute chase that ended when he drove into a field near 22nd Street and Riley Avenue and spun out, police said.

Police said Alvarado is a suspect in 10 smash-and-grab thefts -- mostly from vehicles -- that happened late Monday or early Tuesday at or near the Lakeview Apartments at 21st Street and Mitthoeffer Road.

An officer was interviewing one of the theft victims at the apartment complex at about 6:30 a.m. when the interviewee indicated a man she believed committed the crime was driving away, police said.

"She observed the vehicle leaving the area, so she points that out to the officer," Indianapolis police Sgt. Matt Mount said.

The officer entered his patrol car and followed the man, who was driving a van.

"Somewhere near 30th Street, the suspect hit the gas and the pursuit began," Mount told 6News' Tanya Spencer.

About 10 minutes later, the van, as it approached a dead end, went into a field and spun out. The driver -- whom police later identified as Alvarado -- exited the van, and a police officer fired a stun gun at him, authorities said.

"(Alvarado) goes down to the ground but then starts pulling the probes out from the Taser and reaching down towards his waist where he's got a knife," Mount said. "Now we're in a deadly force kind of a situation."

Mount said that because Alvarado had reached toward the knife, officers began kicking him so they could turn him over and get him handcuffed.

Police said they will review whether the force they used was acceptable.

Authorities said they found numerous stolen items in the van and were working to return the items to their owners.
