Police: Homemade Bombs Found In Apartment

Two Men Arrested

POSTED: 10:02 pm EDT May 14, 2008

Officers acting on an anonymous tip found three homemade explosive devices in a Greencastle apartment this week, leading to the arrests of two men, police said.

Police said they arrested Victor Lee, 20, on Monday after finding the devices and marijuana in his apartment.

"Could have really hurt a lot of people, especially being in an apartment complex," said Greencastle Assistant Police Chief Brian Hopkins.

Investigators eventually determined that David Sutherlin, 36, made the devices, and they found other destructive items in his truck when they confronted him outside his house Monday evening, police said.

"If someone had run into the back of the vehicle, it would have caused a lot of damage and injured a lot of people," Hopkins told 6News' Derrik Thomas.

Police said they expect to arrest a third man, who is suspected of selling to Lee the homemade bombs that investigators allege were found in Lee's apartment.

While officers escorted Lee to his initial court hearing Wednesday, Lee told 6News: "They set me up." He did not elaborate.

Lee's live-in girlfriend, Eva Smith, said apartment managers are forcing her to move.

"I have 10 days to move out. It's pretty upsetting," she said. "Plus, who knows what is going to happen to (Lee) and everything else?"

Members of the Indiana State Police bomb squad detonated the explosives Wednesday, Thomas reported.

Lee was being held Wednesday on a felony charge of possession of a destructive device and misdemeanor charges of possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. Sutherlin was being held on a felony charge of intent to distribute a destructive device and misdemeanor charges of possession of marijuana and possession of a controlled substance.

Bond was set at $20,000 for each. Their next court appearances are scheduled for July 3.
