INDIANAPOLIS -- A man who police said carjacked a woman who escaped by rolling out of her vehicle last year -- an escape that received national media coverage -- was sentenced Thursday to 16 years in prison.Jeffery Burger pleaded guilty to carjacking in the August incident involving Cidney Smith. A judge sentenced him to 20 years in prison but suspended four.Police said Burger approached Smith, then 21, as she entered her car outside Castleton Square Mall on Aug. 10. He held a knife to her throat, pushed her into a passenger seat and told her he needed to drive the car, police said.
As the man started driving with Smith on the passenger-side floor, she grabbed her cell phone, secretly dialed 911 and let a dispatcher listen as Smith talked to Burger, Smith said.Smith told ABC's "Good Morning America" last year that Burger realized she had been using the phone, and he took the device. So, she opened a door and rolled out, and Burger sped away.Police found her thanks in part to the information that the 911 dispatcher heard.Burger, then 45, was arrested later that month when police found him driving the car. Burger led officers on a chase and wrecked the car at 38th Street and High School Road in Indianapolis, police said.
