Officer Injured When SUV Hits Police Car, Building

Driver Was Trying To Avoid Struck Truck, Authorities Say

POSTED: 9:52 pm EDT May 15, 2008

A woman trying to avoid a tractor-trailer that was stuck under an overpass drove the wrong way on a one-way street, striking a police cruiser and then a building Thursday afternoon, police said.

Police said the woman, driving an SUV, turned the wrong way onto Dearborn Street on the city's east side. The SUV struck a police car and then spun into a building at Michigan and Dearborn streets, police said.

The police officer was treated at the wreck site for minor injuries, Indianapolis fire Capt. Gregg Harris said.

The woman, who was not injured, was issued several traffic citations, police said.

Part of the building was damaged by the impact. Workers braced the impact area to prevent collapse.

Police said the woman was trying to drive around a truck that had become stuck under an overpass at LaSalle and New York streets. The truck's trailer was too tall for the overpass.

Workers removed the truck from the overpass. The overpass was being inspected for damage.
