Cute Koalas Visit Indy For Summer
Indianapolis Zoo Koalas On Loan From San Diego
They're normally only in Australia, but Hoosiers will get a rare chance to see them at the Indianapolis Zoo this summer. Two koalas, Bamba and Coombah, were loaned to Indianapolis from the San Diego Zoo, 6News' Tanya Spencer reported. The animals drew a lot of attention on the plane from out west. They had their own seats, in crates of course.
Zookeepers expect patrons will fawn over the animals over the coming months."They're very popular. Most people come to San Diego because we have koalas," said Jennifer Moll, koala keeper at the San Diego Zoo.Bamba and Coombah stay in their trees all day, doing one of two things."They like to sleep. They do sleep a lot -- about 18 to 20 hours a day," said Amanda Mangold, koala keeper at the Indianapolis Zoo. "They'll wake up and eat and sleep some more.""The best time to come see the koalas is when the zoo first opens, when they're cleaning them and feeding them," Moll said. "The koalas should be awake for a few minutes. It's pure luck as to what time you're going to see them awake."Zoo visitors will also learn all about the rare marsupials -- their habitat, two thumbs and how they grow in their mother's pouch, like kangaroos.Koalas eat Eucalyptus, which is very hard to grow. The leaves will be shipped from plantations in Florida and Arizona.About 10 zoos in the U.S. have koalas. They will be in Indianapolis through Sept. 1.
