MOUNT COMFORT, Ind. -- Although the tornado that hit the eastern side of Indianapolis lifted, the same storm caused damage further east in Hancock County. Most of the damage was confined to the Interstate 70 corridor, where straight-line winds of up to 80 mph left their mark. Most of the trees are now laying in the front yard of John White's home on Mount Comfort Road, but he considers himself fortunate.
"I tried to shut the patio door and it liked to blew me away -- pretty frightening," White said.About a half-mile from White's home, as many as a dozen motor homes were flipped and mangled at Mount Comfort RV, 6News' Jennifer Carmack reported.A KOA Campground nearby flooded, and signs were ripped to shreds from I-70 billboards. The roof of a Shell gas station was torn away as Jordan Stuck took cover inside."We started hearing this bang bang ... thinking it's going to be safe in there and then the ceiling started caving in and water started pouring down from the ceiling," Stuck said. Most of the damage was north of Indiana 234, where downed power lines and trees closed many roads. Several homes in that area were damaged by high winds. In spite of all of the damage, there were no injuries reported.
