Recovery from a tornado that plowed through part of Indianapolis' northeast side Friday will take months, but officials were pleased with progress less than 48 hours after the storm.

The tornado heavily damaged the Falcon Point apartments, near 38th Street and Mitthoeffer Road, displacing more than 100 residents and leaving the entire complex in shambles, 6News' Tanya Spencer reported.

Sixty police officers guarded the property on Saturday night. They reported no looting incidents or other crime.

Power was restored Saturday for about 22,000 people who had been in the dark. The rest of the approximately 16,000 Indianapolis Power and Light customers without power should be restored by Monday morning, officials said.

Firefighters are working around the clock to shore up the damaged buildings to get them safe enough so that residents may return briefly Monday to retrieve a few belongings.

"A lot of people have vehicles that are there. Most people, especially in cities like Indianapolis, your vehicle is your lifeblood to your job," said John Ball of Marion County Emergency Management.

Police are allowing people who can prove they live in the apartment complex to come there to get their vehicles.

Starting at about noon on Monday, officials said they expect to allow people into the complex for a short time.
