Hundreds Help Hoosiers In Need

Hundreds of volunteers from all over the U.S. have come to Indiana to assist in flood relief efforts.

Approximately 90 American Red Cross volunteers arrived in Indianapolis Wednesday to join about 350 workers spread throughout central and southern Indiana to help Hoosiers in need after tornadoes last week and flooding rains last weekend, 6News' Jennifer Carmack reported.

"I'm going to be working with client casework with folks coming into the shelter that's needing assistance," said Debbie Scarbrough, who is from Knoxville, Tenn.

Volunteers are helping with just about anything, from serving food to filling sandbags to lending a shoulder to cry on.

"I'll fill sandbags, if that's what's needed -- whatever it takes to help," said John Manners, who lives in Nashville, Tenn.

Volunteers converged on the Indianapolis office to get their assignments and head out into the field.

"If there's a county with damage or in need, the Red Cross is there," said Chris Gilbert, a program manager with the Red Cross.

The organization provides clothing and shelter to victims and makes sure storm victims get something to eat.

In Franklin, a mobile kitchen was set up by the Southern Baptist Convention to provide food for Red Cross mobile feeding trucks.

About 50 people are working to ensure hot meals are delivered to residents working nonstop to clean up what Mother Nature left behind.

"I decided to come help these people … get this feeding unit up off the ground," said Darren Pavey. "I can't describe it. I've never been in that situation. I couldn't even imagine what they're going through."

As of Wednesday afternoon, 5,500 meals had been prepared and served from the mobile kitchen. Volunteers vowed to keep working until the need is met.
