INDIANAPOLIS -- A church on Indianapolis' north side has a lot of cleaning up to do after vandals tore through the property Saturday night.About 20,000 in damage was done to the New Life Community Church, on West 86th Street, near Ditch Road, 6News' Tanya Spencer reported.Vandals struck sometime before 10 p.m. Saturday, when a cleaning crew arrived and discovered the damage.Church elders said they think the vandals broke in through a window in one of the day care rooms.Glass was broken throughout the church. Walls and ceilings were damaged and rooms were ransacked."We have no idea. That's the thing that has been hard for us to figure out -- why someone would do this to a church," said Crystal Paschal, a church elder. Two projection cameras were destroyed, but the only item taken from the church was a debit card, which was canceled as soon as the damage was found."We just pray for their hearts that they will recognize that this was a very malicious act and they should be remorseful for it," said Andy Hunt, the church's pastor. "They've hurt many people they will never know, and they have challenged the security of people who really find safety here."Sunday services were held as planned, but the day care will be closed Monday because of the damage, displacing about 60 children. They hope to reopen on Tuesday.Police asked anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS.
