INDIANAPOLIS -- A post office on Indianapolis' north side now bears the name of late U.S. Rep. Julia Carson, who died of cancer in 2007.The Mapleton Station post office was renamed the Julia M. Carson post office building on Monday.Friends and family attended the ceremony, including her grandson -- U.S. Rep. Andre Carson, who said the name change was an appropriate way to pay tribute to his grandmother.
"This is such a great effort. I really wish she were here to see the love and the passion that the citizens of Indianapolis have for her great work and effort," Carson said. "She was a true public servant in every sense of the word."Julia Carson advocated construction of the post office branch in the 2600 block of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street. It opened in July 2005.Julia Carson spent more than 35 years in public service. She was elected to the first of six terms in the House in 1996.
